St Augustine Bridge of Lions in Highways Bridges Resource Directory

The striking architecture of the Bridge of Lions has been considered an important component of the fabric of the City; the bridge towers are prominent in every skyline rendering of St. Augustine. The City of St. Augustine is the oldest continuous European settlement in North America. Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles first colonized the present area of the City of St. Augustine in 1565 under orders from King Phillip II of Spain. Located in the east central portion of St. Johns County, Florida, this region is rich in historic significance with colonial occupations by the French, British, and Spanish. Colonial rule finally ended when Spain sold Florida to the United States of America on July 10, 1821.
